The present study
examines the short-run relationship between energy consumption and greenhouse
gas emissions for Nigeria. Time series data spanning the period 1986-2018 were
analyzed using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach. The bounds test
results confirm that there is no long-run relationship between greenhouse gas
emissions and energy consumption. The results of short run estimates shows that
D(LOGDFOIL(-1)), D(LOGCRUDE(-1)), D(LOGCOAL(-1)) and D(LOGCOAL(-2)) positively
and significantly impact on CO2 – carbon dioxide emissions per capita
(D(LOGCO2)) while D(LOGMETH(-1)), D(LOGDFOIL(-1)), D(LOGJFUEL(-2)),
D(LOGMGAS(-2)) and D(LOGOPPRO(-2)) were found to have a positively significant
influence on methane emissions (kt of CO2 equivalent). Furthermore,
D(LOGELEC(-1)), D(LOGJFUEL(-1)), D(LOGOGHG(-1)), D(LOGCRUDE(-1)), D(LOGRFOIL(-1)), D(LOGCRUDE(-2)), D(LOGDFOIL(-2)), and
D(LOGDNGAS(-2)) showed positive and significant relationship with other
greenhouse gas emissions (D(LOGOGHG)) such as HFC, PFC and SF6 (thousand metric
tons of CO2 equivalent) were used as dependent variable. As such, there is need
to decrease power plant emissions and promote a greater use of renewable energy
resources in Nigeria.
